About
Finnish harpsichordist Aapo Häkkinen plays Book I of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier on the Christian Vater harpsichord preserved in Nuremberg and on an equally historic clavichord. Two of the 24 pairs of Preludes and Fugues are even presented in an alternative instrumentation on the historic North German organ of Backemoor. Aapo Häkkinen has recorded for the labels Aeolus, Alba, Avie, BelAir, Brilliant Classics, Cantus, Deux-Elles, Naxos, and Ondine, and for numerous European radio and television companies. A writer and broadcaster about many aspects of the early music world, Häkkinen hosts his own programme on Classic FM in Finland. Besides the harpsichord, he regularly performs on the organ, on the clavichord, and on the fortepiano and is highly respected for his artistic talent.

The harpsichord is a particular delight, a modest instrument, with only two eight-foot manuals. Built by Christian Vater and preserved in Nuremberg, it has a precise, silvery tone, mixed with a French tonal richness. Like Häkkinen's performances, its tonal palette is a curious mix of the sprightly and austere.
